WHAT IS SELF-SUSTAINABILITY?
The concept of providing for one’s self isn’t new. Humans have always been self-sustainable. Only in today’s hectic day-to-day society do we find ourselves relying too much on others. In yester-year, a family had to kill themselves bringing the bare necessities to the home. Today the technology has changed as well as the materials, making it easier, cheaper and more efficient to live comfortably independent and self-sufficient.
Still, trying to walk YOUR path in this environment can seem impossible. Society wants us to all move as sheep, working, sleeping, eating together; drowsy drones pushing a machine for reasons we aren’t aware of, yet attach to the comfort of our family. Well, how harmonious is a family without a Dad / Husband or Mother / Wife? Why? When there are other ways to Live Life Simpler.
The Rat Race will have you believe it’s not that simple. I’d have you believe it is. The truth will, in the end, be up to you. New ideas will take getting used to, changes & sacrifices need to be made creating a new life. Changing your mindset will be the biggest challenge. As more and more people seek to pursue a more sustainable lifestyle, there is a growing community of modern-day homesteaders who are discovering the benefits and rewards of being self-sufficient. The vastly improved taste and nutritional value of wholesome, home grown organic food, the smell and texture of home-baked bread, the sound of life frolicking all around you and the joy of sitting outside on a summer's evening with friends and a copious supply of home-brewed beer or wine - these are some of the benefits just waiting to be rediscovered.
Regrettably, our dependence on a consumerist society has meant the loss of many traditional skills. Those taking up this form of lifestyle are dependant on books and other forms of stored information. For some time now, we have been offering these very guides on all sustainable subjects along with workshops, internships & consultations in order to allow others an easier transition into living off-the-grid then we did.
What will it actually cost?
We've designed / constructed average sized homes for averaged sized family's that were completely 100% self-sustainable, incorporating solar panels, wind generators, solar water heaters, water catchments systems, live stock, produce AND land for less then $100k. There is no home in the US that would sell for less then a $100k, let alone a new home that's self-sustainable and environmentally friendly.
There are many forms and levels of self-suitability and our clients have come from a broad range of different locations, economic levels & lifestyles. Regardless of your situation or need, there IS some type of sustainability for you. Be it leaning a solar panel against your apartment or dorm window to offset your monthly electrical bill to building your dream green home, collecting your own rain water, picking your own corn & milking your own goats off the grid.
WHAT TYPE OF HOME WOULD I GET FOR $100K?
AGUA-LUNA teaches, consults and builds only environmentally friendly, high natural thermal mass, energy efficient unique designs. Some of the green building techniques we implore are..
POST & BEAM or Pole Barn, one of the strongest structures, often used as a skeleton for other techniques, creating a rigid lateral structure that is able to withstand horizontal and vertical loads. Poles can be cut from local growth or used poles can be obtained for FREE from utility companies.
RAMMED EARTH, where sand, clay, silt, water & gravel are mixed with cement. The mixture is dumped into forms like old tires or bags, then rammed either by hand or a power tamper. When the desired wall height is reached, the form is removed. The finished results often have some type of interior and exterior siding (adobe, siding, slat, etc.)
UNDERGROUND
or Earthship homes can be visually and thermally rewarding, naturally cooling/heating by up to 30 degrees from outside ambient temps. There are 2 types: partial and full. Each require some type of retaining walls (cinderblock, railroad ties, rammed earth tires, poured concrete, steel, etc.) with a finished interior (adobe, plaster, cod). Living or sod type roofs are optional.
COB or Hobbit homes are similar to adobe & is made from clay, sand & hay. Homes can be made from blocks or coated on using mesh screen in any decorative style or form.
ADOBE
homes are made from blocks or coated onto existing structure using a mesh screen stapled to interior or exterior walls. Blocks are made by pouring adobe mix (sand, hay, clay, paint, water) into a form and left to harden under the sun.
CORDWOOD MASONRY is a great method for alternative building, using not only cords of wood but anything you may find in abundance, including empty food and/or beverage cans, bottles, books; anything that can be immersed in cement, or adobe, creating air voids for insulation and requiring less mix.
PAPERCRETE
magazines, newspapers, junk mail, cardboard or any type of paper is soaked and mixed with cement and dirt. The result is poured into sandbags, placed inside forms, tamped, sun-dried, peeled away and reused again. Each block weighs appx 15 pounds and contains 10 cents worth of cement. All other ingredients are FREE.
STRAW BALES
are stacked like blocks through rebar, to form the walls of a structure. Some type of load-bearing skeleton system is usually incorporated (steel, post & beam, etc.) The bales are then covered with a covering (plaster, adobe, papercrete, etc.) Straw bale walls are highly insolative (up to R40), soundproof, & are very feasible in the plain states where extra or damaged hay bales are FREE.
HYBRID homes embrace multiple forms of alternative construction techniques and energy efficiency. Fabricated in non-traditional shapes, in order to harvest trade winds and solar properties, built from 100% Recycled / Reclaimed materials (i.e.. pallets, reclaimed tin, telephone poles, railroad ties, second hand lumber, etc.).
ROCK homes can be simple, strong and cheap if rocks are abundant in the construction area. Rock walls are put up in two fashions, with or without forms. Formed is much simpler but not as pretty. Formless requires SOME level of skill.
CONVERSION CONSTRUCTION is where any type of pre-existing dwelling or space is naturally and safely converted structurally into a habitable living space. Agua-Luna has converted such locations as barns, abandoned military bunkers, an old county jail, mine shafts, natural caves, airplanes, boats, train box cars & shipping containers, etc.
By adding products such as rain catchments and storage systems, compost toilets, grey water irrigation, solar panels, solar water heaters, solar stoves, wind turbines, solar heating and air conditioning and much more, your guaranteeing you will never pay another utility or fuel bill or be in debt again not to mention the major impact your having helping save the environment.
