About Agua-Luna's Internship Program
Dan Martin, a now retired Engineer from Boeing Aerospace, began designing & constructing Alternative Energy / Sustainable projects in San Antonio Texas up until just 8 years ago (2000), when he started traveling & teaching others through workshops & seminars his methods. In 2003 he moved his family completely Off the Grid in order to dedicate all of his time to teaching others in an onsite environment. Those wanting to learn hands on Alternative Energy / Green, Eco building methods could now do so in a real life, working, Off-Grid atmosphere. Workshops, internships & seminars are now experienced on a 300+ acre, 100% Self Sufficient Alternative Energy run Ranch.
Not only do we teach it… We live it & we look forward to having you live & learn it with us.

Interns will have the opportunity to learn alternative eco-friendly building concepts, technologies and techniques while working alongside the Agua-Luna Mentor Team. Agua-Luna is constantly striving to meet the diverse personal needs of our interns' different lifestyles. Because of this we make sure there are projects in the works at all times of the year, interns are free to come & go & stay for the duration they choose, based solely on dates that best meet their own calendar.
All applicants will be accepted.
Internships are unpaid positions, however a full time Agua-Luna Team Member position will be offered to qualified participants upon completion of at least 500hrs consecutive or none consecutive. Interns are responsible for providing their own accommodations, food, transportation & supplies (ie. batteries, candles, etc), however primitive camping is available on-site, at no extra charge. Meals can be arranged as well for a small fee, please contact us for details.
NOTE: Applications are not used to disqualify anyone from participating in the internship program, they are only a way for us to learn a little about the interns before arrival. ALL APPLICANTS OVER THE AGE OF 18 WILL BE ACCEPTED TO BE INTERNS.

What to expect
|
|
Each new intern will start with a brief orientation meeting at the Agua-Luna Visitors Center. This will include a small tour of the Agua-Luna Ranch, projects, potential work sites, any finished projects as well as the current job site.
Expect to be challenged physically and mentally, to work hard and play hard. Please come prepared to support yourself for the entirety of your stay (ie any medications, etc). Also, please keep in mind you will be working on a construction site.
Agua-Luna Ranch is located between Big Bend National Park on the East, Big Bend Ranch State Park on the West and Mexico's Chihuahua mountains to the south. Covering 300 acres of privately owned land, this remote resort landscape offers visitors the opportunity to stay in the middle of the last frontier in the Continental United States.
Wildlife abounds in the Big Bend and much of it can be seen on the worksite. We have several species of bats, reptiles and birds that inhabit the many grottos and canyons in the area. Mule Deer, Javelina, Bobcats and even the occasional Mountain Lion, Jaguar, wolf and bear have been seen on the ranch.
Feel Free to view the Agua-Luna Intern Photo Gallery to see more images.
NOTE: Some words to describe your new working environment are.. VERY isolated, remote, hidden, solitary, peaceful, expect a transition if coming from the city.
With an elevation around 4000' daytime temperatures at the Ranch average around 60 degrees in winter but can top 100 during the hot summer months. Spring and autumn temperatures can fluctuate dramatically but highs are usually in the 70’s and 80’s with lows from the 30’s to 50’s. Annual rainfall averages a scant 8 inches but luckily, desert storms do produce intense, nourishing cloudbursts, mostly during the summer months.
What to bring
It is very difficult to attend an internship without a vehicle as the Taos area is so spread out. Interns have gotten by with carpooling with other interns and/or hitchhiking, but it can be a challenge.
The weather in Texas is very volatile so bring lots of layers of clothes you don’t mind destroying at work, sturdy closed-toed work shoes, sunscreen and a hat with a wide brim to protect you from the intense sun. If you are camping you’ll want a tent, a tarp, a camp stove (open fires are ok), a sleeping bag, a five gallon water jug, a good flashlight, etc.
Tools: Having a few simple tools will make your internship more comfortable and add a wider variety of work. Here is a list of some helpful tools you can choose to bring (all tools are supplied).
- Leather work gloves
- Heavy duty rubber cement gloves
- Safety Glasses
- Ear plugs
- Dust masks
- Hammer
- Utility knife
- Retractable tape measure
- Tool belt
- Any other hand tools may be useful, i.e. a speed square, combo square, bevel square, chalk line, torpedo level, pliers, chisel as well as small power tools (drill, circular saw)
